Liga III is the third level of the Romanian football league system. Its name was changed from Divizia C into Liga III before the start of the 2006-07 season.
Current format[]
Liga III has six parallel regional divisions, each with 18 teams.
Promotion[]
The winners of each division get promoted to the Liga II.
Relegation[]
The bottom six from each division are relegated at the end of the season to the county football leagues (Liga IV). From the 12th placed teams, another one is relegated. To determine this team, separate standings are computed, using only the games played against clubs ranked 1st through 11th.
Future changes[]
Starting with the 2010/2011 season, Liga III will have 6 series of 16 teams each, with the first team in each series promoting and the last three teams in each series being relegated. The three teams that finished 13th with the worst records are relegated also.
Starting with the 2014/2015 season, Liga III will have only three divisions of 20-22 teams.[1]
